I got this book a few years ago and read it, at the time my kids weren’t quite into reading, however they are now. My son gobbled up this book in one sitting and loved it. I think my daughter loved it more because it
teaches a few foreign words in it, not really on purpose but the character Joey, uses them and explains what they mean during his writing.
The story is about a 12-year-old boy that lives in the post-WW1 area of Boston. The town is still divide, half American and the other half italian and no one can ever mix. Joey never can understand that but tries to learn. His family has been trying really hard to save money to buy some farmland out in the country. But like most children that grow up in an area over time, he doesn’t want to move.
One day though he hears and explosion and walking back home he hears someone calling for help, which of course he does. Later he gets in trouble though because he wasn’t suppose to be in the area. It’s a great book that’ll draw in the child and keep them wanting to learn what happened even after they put the book down.
